I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather and beginning of Michigan summer and your holiday weekend. The Milford Farmer’s Market is up and running once again and there’s lots of produce, meat, poultry, eggs and handmade products from our Great Lake’s State: Asparagus, sweet strawberries, leeks, rhubarb and lots of fresh herbs along with locally grown perennials and flowers. And, a new phenomenon, several booths providing pre-made meals and sauces. What a great way to spend an hour. I try to go to as many of these little town markets as I can. It’s always fun. You should too. These farmers and entrepreneurs work hard to bring us healthy and really fresh food. Give them your “grocery business” if you can. It’s a win-win for everyone.
June 6th, Monday, marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Allied troops in Normandy, France during World War II. General James M. Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers warned his men that “When you land in Normandy you will have only one friend, God.” The largest amphibious invasion in history consisting of over 7,000 vessels and 130, 00 men, half from the US, the others from Canada, Britain and Free French forces. 50,000 vehicles and 11,000 planes were involved in the assault along a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast, the first successful opposed landing across the English Channel in over 8 centuries. The operation began with overnight parachutes and glider landings with the amphibious landings taking place in the early AM hours. Only 10 days were suitable for the landings as the moonlight and spring tides were essential to its success. At the end of five days almost 10,000 Allied soldiers were killed, wounded, missing or captured. Estimates of German casualties were similar and they suffered one of their biggest defeats of the war. What a privilege be the recipient of the freedom won by those brave men and women. I’m very thankful.
As a reminder, Meals on Wheels picked up all the pet food donations that you’ve been so kind to drop off. We need to start filling up the lobby again!! Bring bags, open or new, and cans of food for cats or dogs and place in our front lobby. Or, we’ll be glad to shop for you if you’d like to make a monetary donation. Marilyn Davies, director for MOW is very grateful to be able to supply needy senior’s food for their pets. Together we’ve been able to provide close to 8,000 pounds of pet food. Thank-you SO MUCH!!!
Also, we have lots of room on the patios for larger groups. Think of us for your next celebration or business meeting.
