And, another fine week it has been. I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather and beginning of Michigan summer. The Milford Farmer’s Market is up and running once again and there’s lots of produce, meat, poultry, eggs and handmade products from our Great Lake’s State: Asparagus, sweet strawberries, leeks, rhubarb and lots of fresh herbs along with locally grown perennials and flowers. And, a new phenomenon, several booths providing pre-made meals and sauces. What a great way to spend an hour. I try to go to as many of these little town markets as I can. It’s always fun. You should too. The farmers and entrepreneurs work hard to bring us healthy and really fresh food. Give them your “grocery business” if you can. It’s a win-win for everyone.
June 14th, Sunday, is Flag Day which commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag in 1777. The flag has been modified 26 times since the first one but still has 13 alternating red and white strips, representing the 13 British Colonies who declared their independence from England, and a white 5-point star on a blue backround for each state. Although it is not a national holiday it is celebrated as such in many states. It is also the day the American Legion posts through out the U.S. dispose of worn and tattered flags “in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Also, all flags used on graves at Veteran’s Memorial cemeteries are destroyed on Flag Day. The United States Army also celebrates its birthday on this day. Interestingly enough I was straightening up my barn and came across a centennial flag from 1976 that the former owners of my property left behind. I braved a very tall ladder climb and it now hangs proudly on the barn.
Thanks to Linda Koos from AIG insurance and Terri Mahakian of Hylant insurance for challenging their respective staff’s to see who could collect the most pet food for the Meals on Wheels pantry. They donated hundreds of pounds and by doing so many dogs and cats will get their 3 squares a day delivered along with their owner’s MOW daily meal. Thanks to both teams for your generosity. Things like this make Million Dollar Days for a lot of seniors and their furry friends.
Next Sunday we’ll celebrate Father’s Day at the Bistro with a special “Dad” menu and drink specials. Back by popular demand is the 1# Hot Dog! Reservations are accepted and we will be open for normal hours with brunch served 11-4.
Speaking of specials, Sharon and our kitchen staff have outdone themselves again!! Our Board Features this week include Beautiful West Coast Halibut served with Fried Green Tomatoes and Cheddar Grits; Grilled Delmonico garnished with Zip Sauce and Maytag Blue Cheese; Sautéed Lake Superior Perch accompanied with Marcona Almond Brown Rice Pilaf and Citrus Butter and a Vegetarian Plate that stars a Corn and Savory Custard Pie.
