And, another fine week it has been; how fast they are flying by. It is only 2 months to Christmas and I’m not looking forward to the influx of ads that will be coming with the mail and newspaper. Yes, I still subscribe to the Free Press that is actually delivered to my mail box 3 days a week. It affords the pups and I a good 20 minute walk weather permitting. Tom loved to read the printed word. His favorite was the Sunday New York Times which he’d stretch out for a week. So I keep the tradition, for now at least. I’d much rather have an actual “paper” to read than on screen. There is something about having to adjust your body just right to hold open the pages.
It was another transitional time in the garden this week. Mulch was put down; all the decorative art moved into the barn, cement statuary water-proofed and all metal fencing sprayed with clear lacquer. The dogs hung out with me all day on Sunday. It was beautiful and I worked my butt off taking advantage of the sunshine and warmth. I’m putting coats on the pups in the morning as it is chilly and the lawn wet. Maddie, being a Florida girl, is hesitant to get her tootsies cold. It is actually comical to watch her try to circumvent the grass. They totally dig venturing into the woods to explore. My horse buds are spirited in this cooler weather too. They both love their faces and foreheads to be rubbed and tend to lean into my curry comb so hard that I’m backed onto the stall wall and have to push their 1400 pounds off of me. Then, each of them will nudge and lick me asking for more. Picasso and Z are just pups of a different size…
Halloween is the celebration of the Eve of Saints. The word dates back to 1745 and marks the end of harvest and beginning of winter or “the darker half of the year.” Trick-or-Treating began in the Middle Ages when poor people collected baked goods called “soul cakes” from the wealthy. In exchange they promised to pray for the giver’s deceased loved ones. Costumes were worn in an effort to scare spirits away, Jack-0-Lanterns were used in ancient Ireland to frighten away ghosts and bobbing for apples was celebrated during the Roman festival for Pomona, the goddess of fruit and orchards around November 1. The first person to catch a bobbing apple with their teeth would be the first to marry in the New Year.
Also the International Committee of the Red Cross was founded on October 29th, 1863 by Jean Henri Dunant, a wealthy Swiss businessman, who was moved by war’s devastating effect on both the soldiers and civilians while on a business tour of battle fields in northern Italy in 1859. He urged for the creation of a multi-national relief effort that would care for those wounded in wartime. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901; the first ever awarded, and bequeathed the money to charity. His mission statement: “We are all brothers.” He died on October 30th, 1910 but his vison lives on.

Bistro Plates Include: RACK OF LAMB: Rubbed with EVOO, Dijon, Rosemary and Garlic, Grilled and Presented with Sweet Potato Gratin, Skinny Green Beans, and a Port Wine Demi-Glace; GOLDEN CORVINA: Similar to Snapper – Pecan Crusted, Roasted and Accompanied with a Savory Potato, Caramelized Apple, Onion and Asiago “Strudel” and Creamed Swiss Chard; POOR MAN’S LOBSTER: Monkfish Medallions Sautéed and Served with a Wedge of Baby Kale and Applewood Smoked Bacon Tart, Roasted Autumn Squashes and a Drizzle of Herb Butter Sauce. For Dessert: ICE CREAM SANDWICH: I know, it’s our Second Week with Serving this Belgian Waffle, Peanut Butter Mousse and Gurnsey Vanilla Topped with Warm Caramel, but we’ve got such Great Feedback we Decided to Keep it Going. YUM!!!
