And, another fine week it has been! The weather is pretty unbelievable for this time of the year. Yesterday after our walk, Niki, Pico and I fed the birds, which is quite a fun routine for us as they race around the yard and try to sneak into the woods when they think I’m not looking. Bird feeding is a comfort task for me as I get to leisurely check out my gardens as I pass from feeder to feeder. Believe it or not I have flowers on the hellebores (a.k.a. Lenten roses), they are cold weather bloomers, and buds on the Magnolias, which always bud now as they’re gearing up for spring flowers.
Things are certainly in holiday mode around the Bistro! There have been lots of parties on the patios and it seems as if everyone walking in has a present to pass along. I finished my shopping in just a few minutes… gift cards are the request of my nieces and nephews. Boy, have things changed. In the “old” days I actually loved to pick out the perfect gift for them. There were wrapped presents under a “real” tree. Not any longer. It has taken me a long time to accept that this is the new norm. To top it off they text me their requests. YIKES!!! One of the best Christmas’s I can remember was 12 years ago when my little Niki came into the Brady household. Also, that was when Shadow, a black lab, came into our lives. He was given to us by a dear friend Carrie Pryce, then a puppy trainer for Leader Dogs. She’d always bring in the “youngsters” to the restaurant as part of their schooling. I told her once that I’d love one if it did not make the program. Well, wouldn’t you know, that same Christmas she called to offer us Shadow. He wasn’t working out because of his submissiveness. In other words, he’d wag his big tail and roll over to have his tummy scratched. Not a good trait for a dog leading a blind person. My nephew’s had met Carrie a few weeks before at the Bistro and, being little boys, innocently asked her for a dog too. I jokingly said they could have mine if I ever got one. (At that point, Tom and I had been literally waiting years for one to become available.) So, Shadow was “gifted” to them and Niki came to us and all is well in the world of dogs. And, speaking of dogs…. Thanks for the dog and cat food. The pet pantry is filling up! “It is in Giving that you shall Receive” Happy Holidays from all my friends, Niki, Pico, Shadow and Z!
