I’m thrilled to announce that Amanda and Paco welcomed their beautiful baby girl, Lotus, into the world on Tuesday morning. Congratulations!!! We can’t wait to meet her.
Sunday I had the pleasure to see the final performance of Pipeline at the Detroit Public Theater. I enjoyed it tremendously. Roz and I had planned this a few months ago and both of us love the venue, and, every play that we have seen there. The tickets are reasonable.. $30 if you’re a senior, $40 otherwise. There is such a diverse crowd and all 200 seats were full. Everyone was happy, smiling, friendly and all enthusiastically enjoyed the show. There was also an opera in the main theather so the place was buzzing. We had brunch at the Royal Oak Brady’s and it was just a 10 minute ride down Woodward with easy parking. A highlight of the afternoon, macabre in a sense, was sighting a hawk catching his dinner, a rodent of some sort, then carrying it into a tree to indulge. I could only think that I’d only see a beautiful bird of prey in my woods… How cool to know they are alive and well in a bustling city scape.
The new menu has been a hit. My favorites are the Pork Ragu over Ricotta filled Ravioli and Seared Salmon atop a toss of Butternut Squash, Cashews and Greens Tossed with a Maple-Soy Glaze. The Hat Trick appetizer jar is back and also the wickedly good Bread Pudding. Menu changes are brutal on Sharon and the kitchen especially. Product that we had been using has to be incorporated into specials so there is no waste, new sides and dishes prepped for “opening day” and the tedious task of changing the “computer” or Point of Sale system. There is also the printed menus – brunch, lunch, dinner – that need to be re-done and to the printer and prep lists, changing the recipe book and mostly, for the cooks, re-arranging their minds to the changes. Then, turn the menu over, and there are the wines and beers and drinks. Yikes… Good job all. Thank you.
Monday is Veteran’s Day, a celebration honoring fellow Americans who have served our country in the military. They protect today, or protected in the past, our greatest blessing, that of freedom. Our Constitutional rights and the fight for world peace are strengthened daily thanks to them. My Grandfather Smith served in 2 World Wars achieving rank of Colonel. Much of his time was in the Calvary, the horseback division of the Army, Dad was in the Navy, Uncle Tom and John were in the Army and my nephew-in-law, Alex is currently enlisted and will be deployed to Iraq and the front lines for the third time later this month. He is a Bronze Medal recipient as is Tom’s brother, Matt, who served in Vietnam. Many thanks and much gratitude for all who serve us and this great land!
