And, another fine week it has been! I had a very fun ride on my mighty “Z” today and Pico is hanging out on my lap as I write while the lovely Nikibelle is cuddled on “her” chair.Mom and I took advantage of a rainy day and saw the Jungle Book. I was teary eyed from the opening scene. What a wonderful movie. I know that I read the book as a child and can’t wait to do so again. Interestingly, listening to NPR, as I was running errands earlier today, Wayne Paselle, the President and CEO of the American Humane Society, was being interviewed and noted that Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book started a movement for the betterment of animals. As did Black Beauty. Next week is “Be Kind To Animals Week” and as a kick off Ringling Brothers Circus will retire all of their performing elephants. I also learned that
Las Vegas not longer has animal shows and Cirque du Soleil evolved as a replacement with human acrobats versus animal actors that were many times abused.Evolution is good!!!
Last night a 75th birthday party was held for a long time friend and restaurant buddy Ernie Kramer. I first met Ernie as a salesman for all the “stuff” you would ever need when Tom and I opened the Prudential Town Center Location in Southfield. We became, and have continued, to be fast friends for close to 40 years. It was certainly a tribute to him that Reid Ashton of Golden Mushroom fame and Maria Gatzarous matriarch of the Fishbone restaurants and the London Chop house were there in his honor. If there was a Detroit Restaurant Hall of Fame the three of them would be in it. How very cool to have icons of theDetroit hospitality scene in our Bistro!!
Speaking of birthday’s Pico’s is on Cinco de Mayo, a National Holiday in Mexico and the U.S. officially celebrated on May 5thbut sometimes lasting a week with parades, music and food. It is the commemoration of victory over the French forces of Napoleon III in 1862. Also known as the Battle of Puebla it is a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination. 4,000 Mexican troops were able to overcome 8000 French troops that had not been defeated in over 50 years.

Yum!!!
