Wow, can you believe this weather? It is “San Diego” in the Midwest. Although we get the wild storms and the West Coast fires and earthquakes. In any case I could live this 24/7 -365. I’ve got lots of yard and woods clean-up thanks to the storms lately but am glad to do so with the low humidity. Niki, Pico and Maddie are very happy to hang outside too. And, to be able to happily take a walk without drooping from the heat and sun. The neighbor grandchildren are in love with my pups. Especially Maddie. They use my long drive to ride bikes, blade and board. “Mad” goes wild frolicking with them but keeps her distance. She still isn’t sure of her lot in this new life. She’ll grow into being a free spirit I’m sure. There isn’t a mean bone in her little body. We’re lucky to have her in our house. Everyone gets along perfectly. Picasso is spending his days, unless Liz is riding him, happily grazing and the Z boy and I are moving along with our training. It is a fun journey; he is the horse of a life time.
My dear sweet Mom gives me a subscription to Nutrition Actionfor Christmas every year. It is a great little magazine with an incredible wealth of information in each issue. Some of which I’ll pass on... A recent comparison from 1970 to 2016 of the State of The Plate (i.e. what Americans are eating) is alarming. The food supply’s calorie per person per day has blown up since 1970 with most of the 460 extra calories coming from a jump in largely refined grains and fats. Nuts, seafood, poultry and fruits have risen, red meat fallen and sugar is down since 1999, when it reached a high. Unfournately the top 5 vegetables noted in the 2016 study are potatoes, white, and in the form of chips and fries; tomatoes, mostly canned and “head lettuce” mostly nutrient-poor iceberg. The fruits: oranges, juiced; apples juiced or canned; grapes become raisins or juice… We, as a society, need to re-think our nutrition. 70% of the American population is obese, cardio disease; heart attacks and stroke are on the rise. Here is the good news—90% is preventable with diet and life style changes. What really blows my mind though, a large majority of our world’s population is starving. I can’t wrap my head around that, one society dying from too much food, another from not enough or none.
