And, another fine week it has been! It is so nice to see all the celebrating going on at the Bistro. Everyone is in a cheerful mood and there is lots of love going around. We’re glad to provide the comfort and joy and get great pleasure seeing you having a fun time.
I’m done with my putting out the few decorations that I have time for this year. “In the old days” I’d spend hour upon hour carefully placing beloved holiday nick-knacks in just the right spot. Tom would do the tree and we’d enjoy our handiwork until New Years Day. Nearly every ornament and decoration I own has a story. Bulbs that were Grandma Smith’s, wooden Santa’s decades old, a collection of Irish crosses- gifts from a fellow Irish woman over the years, a wooden train from my Dad and the 1950’s tree lights given to us by a dear friend because she “thought they were us.” I get such pleasure remembering the people behind the ornaments; it is my Christmas memory lane.
I can’t believe that it has been a two years since my big boy Ziezo came into my animal fold. He is a delight not only as a competition partner but also because of his kind and loving nature. He is truly a happy horse. Z is honest and noble. He’s a great teacher, a school master that has patiently put up with his student, me, as I “move up” the dressage ladder. And he so adores his “groom” Courtney. I know the feeling is reciprocal. “Court” is at the barn 4 mornings a week to get Z ready for me to ride. About the only thing she can’t do is lift his feet to pick them out or lift the saddle onto his back. Z is big but gentle and especially so with her. He whinnies when she walks into the barn and licks and nuzzles her the whole time she is brushing him. And, since I’m back riding Picasso she’s grooming two horses. P is a lovely boy too and is wildly in love with her also. I’m such a lucky girl – Courtney, P and Z, gifts that give all year long.
And, I can’t forget Niki and Pico who have been very forgiving of my schedule over the last few weeks. They are still thrilled to see me when I walk in the house and don’t hold any grudges that I’m not around enough for their liking. Of course, they’re getting extra tummy scratches and I’ll pick up some puppy Christmas cookies to put under the tree for them.
Sharon and crew have some great Chalkboard Features starting tonight. Always a favorite is Shepherd’s Pie: Ground Beef slowly Braised with Portobello Mushrooms, Leeks and Carrots in a Rich Beef Gravy and Topped with Buttermilk Mashers and Baked to Bubbly; Sautéed Lake Superior Perch Accompanied with Brown Rice, Steamed Broccoli and a Roasted Garlic Butter Sauce; New Orleans Jambalaya: Gulf Shrimp Pan Roasted with Chicken Andouille Sausage, Bell Peppers, Celery and Onion in a Tomato Creole Rice and for our Veggie Lovers A Vegan Stuffed Butternut Squash filled with Quinoa Mixed With Spinach, Red Onion, Pecans and Fresh Cranberries then Drizzled with a Balsamic Reduction. YUM!!
