And, another fine week it has been. I have spent 2 weekends this month at horse shows. They are a ton of work physically and mentally. These were the first that I’ve been able to this summer so it was great to get back in the ring. Both were a success as Z was amazing, I didn’t have any life-threatening experiences and added a couple ribbons to boot. It was a year ago now that I earned my Bronze Medal on Z, scored by Olympic Judge Lilo Fore and icing on the cake was my sister Liz being there as my groom. What a great memory and, considering Z has had 2 major surgeries on his front legs in the last 4 years. What a miracle that I could earn it on my best horse “bud” ever. Dressage is not for the faint hearted as its extremely precise pattern work and of utmost importance to be one with your horse. Most riders are professional women; men are few and far between. My barn usually has 5-6 riders competing and we are all stabled together so there’s lots of interesting conversations going on between us. And, we’re there to help and support each other too. My favorite is getting home and in a hot shower to wash of the dust and grime of the day. I always sleep like a rock! Other recent horse fun was having my great nieces Addy and Genny visited from Arkansas and came to take a lesson on Z. Both are accomplished riders. Addy won her Regional Dressage Champion Championship last year, a huge accomplishment. They both had a great ride. The first year that I owned Z, 2016, they came to get a “ride” on him. I’d like to think that it contributed to their love of horses. And, for me, it was great to watch two enthusiastic young women enjoy my guy as much as I do. He loved it too.
Friday, August 26th, is National Dog Day. The intention is to honor dogs and to rescue those from homelessness and abuse. Founded in 2004 it encourages dog ownership of all breeds, ages, colors and mixtures. The goal is for all pups to live a happy and safe life. Canines were the first animal domesticated centuries ago and have been used as herders, hunters and are the most widely kept pet. Their impact on society has earned them the nickname of “man’s best friend.” Or, in my case woman’s. Let’s celebrate the importance of dogs, and how they touch so many of our lives on a daily basis, by dropping some food or treats to our Meals on Wheels Pet Pantry that ensures Homebound Seniors are not feeding their pets half their own meals. Thank-you in advance!!!
Speaking of pups, Maddie and Sofia are in their glory sitting on the hot driveway watching me water plants and puts around. Mad has found “her” rock on the border that she just goes to cuddle up with. It is her heating pad. And Sophie just curls in a little ball with just her eyes showing so she can keep a watch of what is going on. Z and Kos are great and enjoying their work under saddle then out to graze for the rest of the day. I’m so fortunate to have my furry friends.
