And another fine week it has been. I have been going through the loft of my barn purging paperwork and such and came upon some boxes of Brady memorabilia. There was a photo album from the opening of the Brady’s in the Prudential Town Center in Southfield, circa 1979. What struck me was that we are still using the same artifacts some originally from 7 Mile. The Garland stove, the wooden Mexican Merry-Go-Round horse, the stained glass lamp and Diamond Jim Brady's sign that graced the entrance door. Our Bistro has layers and layers of history. It is very personal, sort of like a diary; our story. And now, the next chapter begins with the soon to open Jim Brady’s Detroit in Royal Oak. I spent some time there yesterday and Tommy and Darin have created a space that is unlike anything in Detroit that I’m aware of. Like my father-in-law Jim they’ve paid attention to the smallest details so that everyone that walks through the doors will have a unique experience. And, like the Brady’s before it, Jim Brady’s Detroit is a tribute to Jim’s legacy. There is a nearly life-sized mural on one wall, replicated from a picture taken on 7 Mile years ago, that of Tom and his father. Jim. They are now keeping watch over the next era of a 60 year old business that started as a small bar and grill in Detroit. It quickly became one of the busiest places in the city with people waiting in line to grab on of the 65 seats. I know that they are as proud of us as we are of carrying forth their vision to the next level.
The winter menu has a few changes that you’ll enjoy including Pimento Cheese; a Duck Confit flatbread and Shrimp Linguini. And the Chalkboard Features outstanding as usual. Cracker Crusted Rainbow Trout Garnished with a Red Pepper Remoulade; Grilled Swiss, Cheddar & Mozzarella Sandwich on Multi-Grain accompanied with Curried Potato Chips; Grilled Pork Chops Presented with a 3 Bean and Italian Sausage Ragout; Canadian Walleye and an Italian Dark Chocolate Olive Oil Cake. YUM!!
For me, Thanksgiving Day has always been the start of winter and the holiday season. The reminiscences of past years are dear: big turkeys and all that go with them. Grandmother made the pies until my sister Liz took over the duty. What pies they were. Pecan, sweet potato and pumpkin. All still warm from the oven and topped with real whipped cream. Mom was up at the crack of dawn readying the bird for roasting. Dad did the dressing which included everything but the kitchen sink. Then too all the little appetizers: Bar cheese stuffed celery, big black olives (a must have for my sister Kitty), Aunt Betty’s pickled beets and deviled eggs.
And, in the spirit of the holiday I give thanks. Thankful that I am not homeless or hungry and have the ability to help those who are; grateful for all the wonderful opportunities that I am given on a daily basis; proud of a remarkable staff that strives to satisfy not only Sharon and me, but each individual that walks through our door; glad for all the old friends that we see each day and thrilled for all the new ones we’ve made over the years and so appreciative of your compliments -- they kindle a fire in us to come back and do our best every day. Thank-you!
