As much as I am here, I’ve never really sat down as a “guest”. Even if I have sat for a moment, I’m up and down and doing my normal job of keeping an eye on things. This last weekend I just enjoyed the Bistro as a true guest. We sat up in the front patio so I couldn’t even see the rest of the restaurant. I just sat back, relaxed and soaked it all in.

Jena was our server. It was funny to see her in “professional” mode. I think she was even more serious than she usually is… maybe she was a bit nervous waiting on the most important people in the world to me with my eyes on her. (wink wink) She is always so light and sunny and hilarious, she definitely gave great service but was more reserved than I usually see her with guests. I really enjoyed watching Jena work the room. Her timing was excellent and we all ordered with special instructions. Jena was patient and thorough. All guests around us seemed content and happy as well. Thank you, Jena, for a wonderful evening. My family adores you, as do I.

As for the food, everything was so tasty, I went for the Arctic Char with the braised lentils and that tasty pickle salad on top. Yum… the flavors were jumping! My southern mamma really enjoyed the Southern Corn Pudding (inspired by her) and we all LOVED Chef Leslie’s Lemon Cake. Without bragging I’m going to say that was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in a while… and you know I LOVE to eat out and try other restaurants, so that is a real compliment.

When we left that night, my older sister, Christine, was misty eyed and told me how proud she was of me and what I’ve accomplished. It’s funny because I feel like I’ve been in the restaurant biz forever, like I haven’t changed that much. But I will say owning a restaurant and just being an employee are two totally different worlds. I learned so much and have had to mature a lot these last four years. As a youngster, the girl my sister probably still sees when she looks at me, I was a bit of a wild kid, I didn’t finish college, maybe got into a little trouble here and there and was a bit of a rebel I suppose. I got married late in life, chose not to have children and have lived my life quite freely and selfishly at times. I think growing up, being the baby, my family’s expectations of me were not very high. And maybe that’s why I did okay, not too much pressure was on me, and I always knew I was totally loved. But really, I know that the reason I am successful and the Bistro is so popular is because of my amazing team. It takes a major village to run a restaurant. I am just a small part of it. Fifteen years ago, when Mary Brady asked me to re-open the Bistro with her, I was excited, but I didn’t really know what was coming, I was never sure I would ever own the Bistro by myself. I’m glad I stuck it out. Here we all are! I have a tight-knit family working here and I am beyond lucky to have so many qualified, caring people working with me. So, cheers and kudos to them!
