My manager, Amanda, and I got a chance to get out together last week. It’s a very RARE occasion when at least one of us isn’t in the building during service. Something Tom and Mary taught me years ago was how important it is that an owner or manager are always working. But Amanda and I had a great excuse… a Mexican wine tasting… just another day of hard work but someone had to do it!?!
We met in Cork Town at Supergeil.  The folks behind Two James Distillery own this sharp establishment, so you know the cocktail program is on point! Cardamom, rose water and chamomile are some of the more interesting ingredients in their drinks. Amanda and I approved! Supergeil’s food is mostly Mediterranean with an Eastern European influence, it’s a borderline bizarre menu but I’ve always loved it. The restaurant is full of natural light and plants and has a tremendous patio as well.

After lunch we walked through Michigan Central Station, Amanda had never seen it before. They are still doing guided tours, but we just strolled around. If you haven’t seen the station, the restoration is amazing. The attention to detail the Ford family paid to this historic building is incredible.

Our final destination was Vecino, a modern Mexican restaurant. The tasting was for the “trade”, so invite only. Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay blends were the typical whites we saw. The reds were bold. Grapes like Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Cab Franc were represented. The wines came mostly from the Baja region and many from Central Mexico. Interestingly, the wines we tasted were a nice balance of old-world style (sophisticated, well rounded earthy flavors) with new-world style (bold, fruit forward). I’ve found my travels to Mexico itself to be that way, historical yet modern, rustic and lavish all at the same time. Amanda and I usually have different palates, but our top two wines were the same pick. We’ll bring in a few different bottles over the next few weeks for you all to try. I’ve been wanting to dine at Vecino since they opened last year but haven’t yet. Unfortunately, only a few snacks were put out so I can’t say much about the food yet, but the nibbles served were nice. I’m looking forward to returning for the full experience.

Cheers,
Sharon
