Being a Royal Oaker I usually get out of town during Dream Cruise. I’m not a big car fan, my first car was an 85 Ford Tempo. Trust me, I don’t look back at that car with any loving nostalgia. To avoid the crowds, we instead go camping and canoeing on the Pine River near Cadillac. We’ve been camping with the same group of people for years. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t look too hot so at the last minute one of my hens invited us up to her place in Harbor Springs. She was kind enough to invite the entire crowd, 12 of us invaded her home! I consider our style of camping “glamping”, we have a raised air mattress, a family sized tent we can stand up in with a door, incredible food cooked over the fire but this year in Harbor was indeed a wee better than glamping. King size bed, private bathroom, an incredible view of the bay and a chef on hand to cook for all of us was incredible. Additionally, we were fortunate enough to have great weather, and we giggled as we watched the radar over our original campsite covered in rain daily. We still wanted to stick to our glamping “roots” and had booked a day of kayaking down the Sturgeon River, but the overnight rain had increased the water levels to a dangerous level and the livery would not rent boats to us. When the announcement was made that our paddle was cancelled, I think it took someone two seconds to pop a bottle of champagne (our drink of choice). Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.
