With the Bistro being closed New Year’s Day Michael and I were able to “relax”. I started the day with my Bestie, Sara, at Nafas the studio she is a regular at. The class was excellent. Our instructor was encouraging, kind and thoughtful. She read a great poem to set the tone and then toned our bodies. I haven’t been hitting the mat like I should, so I found the class challenging, but I did appreciate what my muscles could remember. I had a sore upper body the next day, but that was a great feeling to move again AND put my brain on pause for 40 minutes. Sara and the class have inspired me to begin another 30 Days with Adriene on YouTube. Who’s in with me?

Keeping the healthy morning rolling, I made a lunch of Vegan Stew with coconut milk, garbanzo beans and loads of veggies. Michael and I took Brisket for hike in a park we found in Southfield of all places, tucked right along the expressway, Lincoln Woods Nature Preserve. For being next to 696 it was oddly quiet and very peaceful. We enjoyed the chilly fresh air and crisp snow under our feet. Brisket loved it too and was happy to see a nature preserve that allows dogs (many do not).

For many years Michael and I hosted a New Year’s Day blowout party but as we’ve aged and slightly sobered up, the day has become more intimate and less boozy. Not that we didn’t pop a few great bottles, but certainly many less than in years prior. We kept the guest list to the Hens and their sweeties, and I didn’t cook a thing!! My girls knew I was wiped out from the busy Bistro holiday schedule, so they brought all the snacks (and most the bubbles too)!

Speaking of Hens, we celebrated Janis at Hazel’s in downtown Birmingham. Great seafood restaurant! We had a whole room to ourselves to surprise Janis for her birthday. Thank you to Lynne for organizing! If you get a chance to make it out to Birmingham, ask for Lynne or Michelle to take care of you and you will be guaranteed an excellent meal. Tell them a Pickled Hen sent you.

I hope your New Year is off to a healthy start filled with laughter, friends and great food!

Cheers,
Sharon
