After 13 years of planning employee Christmas parties with Mary, I was out of ideas. Trying to find interesting new things that the entire staff would enjoy doing in the winter left me exasperated. So, we decided to have our holiday party in August! I had to plan something for a Monday as Max and his pizza cart have been booked every Sunday all summer (you can catch That’s That Pizza at the Birmingham Farmers market this Sunday).

We met at the Bistro at noon and hopped on a party bus towards Grosse Pointe Park to have lunch at The Charlevoix. I would describe the restaurant as a mix between casual street food with an international flare and midwestern comforts. Highlights were the Carrot Tostadas, Thai Cheesesteak Po’Boy, Mini Fried Chicken Slider, Habanero-Honey Wings and Crab Cake. They serve their food in paper boats or granny’s fine china; I love the mash up of new and old, casual and fancy. The cocktails and beer list were excellent, the service from Christal & BJ was on point. Highly recommend!

We all stumbled back on the bus towards our main destination… The Spirit of Lake St. Clair where we boarded an older wooden boat that used to be a ferry for the Detroit Yacht Club. The captain gave us a few history notes on Lake St. Clair as we pulled out of the marina. We turned on the music, popped open some drinks and set out into the beautiful day. The boat seats at least 30 comfortably and cruises the lake, hugging the shoreline towards the Detroit River. Some of the highlights were Ford’s Cove, where you can see the back of the Edsel & Eleanor property, the Art Van mansion and the Grosse Point Yacht Club. My favorite part was hosting 20 fabulous people, some who had never been on a boat like that on such a large lake, just sitting back, watching the waves roll out and the sun shine in. What a fabulous day we all had on the water! I’m lucky to be part of such a cool diverse group of people with so many different personalities and desires who can still come together and laugh and truly enjoy each other’s company.

Cheers,
Sharon
