The Bistro is thankfully steady busy throughout the year, no one season is necessarily any busier than the other but for me, personally summer is crazy busy. I like to take advantage of the long sun filled days; I cram as much as I can into June through September. My sister Karen and her Scottish clan arrived in the end of June, and we’ve been non-stop since the day they arrived.

We hit the Moth in Ann Arbor at the Michigan Theater. If you’ve never seen a Moth performance, I recommend finding one. It’s a night where a topic is chosen and predetermined people get up and tell their stories. You laugh, you may cry, and you may even learn something.

Sunday, we celebrated Karen and her daughter Elsa’s birthdays at the Dearborn Glass Academy. We took a “lesson” in glass blowing. It was 90 degrees outside and about 150 in front of the oven. Pretty cool experience, pun intended. They have a little bar for getting a cool drink and a gift shop filled with ACTUAL artists’ wares. Great place for a date! A lovely lunch at The Great Commoner on Michigan Avenue ended our perfect morning with matcha lattes, pancakes and Middle Eastern food… I know it sounds like an odd combo, but I did enjoy the swanky brunch meets healthy Halal lunch with posh pastries from Cannelle.

Monday, we traveled to Saginaw University to see the Marshall Fredricks Museum of Sculpture, if you’ve seen the Spirit of Detroit, or walked the Cranbrook campus you’ve seen his works. The pieces we saw inside the museum were all original casts of his impressive work with some of his actual bronze pieces placed throughout the campus. Fredricks has made over 200 sculptures in his lifetime. I didn’t realize how many pieces I’ve seen throughout Detroit until I went to the museum. Driving home we went through Old Town Saginaw, much like Flint, Old Town is a neighborhood that has been hurt by the loss of manufacturing. Old Town is trying to revive itself like Detroit with the edition of street murals, coffee shops and a distillery. Unfortunately, without supportive local suburbs, I think they are going to need more than that.

We spent our Fourth of July swimming at a friend’s house, playing water and card games, eating Tacos and drinking Hugo Spritzes. A walk through Cranbrook, one of my favorite walks, to see some of Fredricks sculptures “in the wild” completed a very busy but fun week. They even have a creative puttputt instillation on the grounds, perfect for the whole family. I will have more to share with you next week, as my family continues exploring new spots.

Last important note Brother-in-Law Glasgow Joe and my amazing niece Elsa will be performing at the Bistro. Make your reservations soon for Thursday the 17th of July and due to high demand, there will be a second show on Thursday July 31st. The Tinneys will start around 6 PM and play until 8. I can’t wait!!!!!

Cheers,
Sharon
