Halloween was a real bust here at the Bistro, it is always a slow night but seemed especially quiet this year…. AND no one could guess what my costume was?!!? Pphhfff…what a WAIST of THYME my costume was!!!! No that is not a typo that was my costume. Seems my “pun” went over with a thud. I will say I did enjoy the slower pace as I was able to sit with and visit friends, old and new, at the Bistro without interruption. Gave me plenty of time to “explain” my costume. Server Mariah was Pappa Smurf and had the best costume by far!!! Thanks to guests Roe & Bob for dressing up too… they were adorable.

I hosted a gathering Sunday at my house for my Aunt Margie, my mom’s sister. Like my mom, Margie was a large influence on my falling in love with cooking. As a young girl, I remember watching her, Grandmama and Mamma in the kitchen. Peeling tomatoes, canning butter beans, big bowls of potato salad, gooey mac-n-cheese, biscuits and pies are some of my many memories. Margie often took charge of the kitchen at home, and she is definitely the boss in her kitchen at her church. Aunt Margie recently retired from 20 years of “volunteering” for her church. Every Wednesday Margie has been making Wednesday Night Suppers for nearly 100 people. The low cost, high effort delicious meals helped raise money for the church and gave the congregation a sense of community and the opportunity for an inexpensive home cooked meal. She did all the planning, budgeting and shopping as well as the actual preparation for the meals. She had a small but dedicated staff to help prep the food, but it was really her menu and ideas that drove that kitchen. Margie would probably never call herself a chef but really she did all the things a professional chef does. She even put out a small cookbook. Aunt Margie certainly has a way with Southern food and understands that cooking is really a way of giving to people, a way to share your love and show compassion.

Cheers,
Sharon
