Last weekend Michael and I celebrated his 57th birthday in East Jordan. We rented a small romantic cabin (The Promised Land, if you care to look it up) through Airbnb right on the edge of the Jordan River. The river was deep, quick and very clear. Perfect for a 3-hour paddle down the river with Brisket in our canoe and our dear friend Jen joined us in her kayak for the day. The first hour upstream was lightly challenging and the rest was easy peasy, I wouldn’t really know that as I think I only had to put my paddle in the water once or twice. Michael is an excellent paddler; he learned all his techniques spending his summers at Camp Tamakwa as a young boy. He has told me about camping in Algonquin Park, learning to sail and canoe, are some of his best memories. Check out the movie Indian Summer if you want to peak into what life at Camp Tamakwa might have been like.

But back to our weekend… the cabin was cute (and clean!). Built from a kit in 1955, full of memorabilia from the family’s joy of fly fishing and a nod to their long history in the cabin with lots of attention to detail and most importantly, dog friendly!

We enjoyed morning coffee in the Adirondack chairs listening to the river, lots of bird watching, the place was loaded with Woodpeckers. Afternoons were spent with a glass of wine, laughing at the paddlers who got stuck on the log right in front of our place. We had a few fabulous meals, yes, I’m tooting my own horn… Michael said I knocked it out of the park, he’s often my biggest critic so I’ll take the compliment. Highlights were Halibut with Prosciutto Butter Sauce, Caviar & Potato Chips, Oyster Rockefeller, Old Bay Brown Butter Crab Rolls & a 2# Tomahawk Steak. Mornings consisted of Mushroom Quiche, Chorizo Potato Breakfast Tacos and Homemade Gravlax. Evenings were spent around the firepit, and I finally convinced Michael to play Uno with me. Very relaxing four days. I’m a lucky lady… I wish Michigan summers lasted forever.

Cheers,
Sharon
