I try not to talk about politics, it makes for bad dinner conversation. However, a recent ruling in the Michigan Supreme Court has impacted the restaurant industry in an extremely negative fashion. You may have seen the tabletop tents with the QR code at the Bistro asking you to SAVE MI TIPS. Basically, the courts decided to eliminate the Tip Credit Act (43 states use the tip credit). The Tip Credit Act allows restaurants to pay servers less than minimum wage as they get tips instead, and they surpass the minimum wage. Maybe you think it might be nice if you didn’t have to tip the servers? You may think your bill will decrease, tipping culture may feel out of control… but here’s what would happen if we lose the TIP CREDIT :
The impact of losing the tip credit will be catastrophic according to statewide surveys conducted by the Michigan Restaurant Association:
The Bistro would definitely have to increase menu prices, not just by a buck or two but substantially. I would be forced to have less servers on the floor resulting in poor/slow service and less hours for the girls working, equaling less dollars in their pockets. There may be a mass exodus from restaurant workers looking to get out of the service industry all together, limiting your dining choices. Lastly, assistant staff like bussers and hosts may lose their jobs entirely and cooks would not see any pay rate raises for a while. The restaurant industry runs on very thin margins, we cannot afford to lose the TIP CREDIT. And finally, SERVERS DO NOT WANT THIS! They would make much less money if they were paid minimum wage and had no tips or decreased tips. They depend on tips to survive. Be sure to uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the automated email section so you do not receive updates from the MRLA, unless you would like to stay informed. We appreciate your support. There is a lot wrapped into to this bill, and it is slightly complicated. To clarify, we do not oppose raising the minimum wage for Michigan workers. We do oppose losing the MICHIGAN TIP CREDIT.
