A few weekends ago, Michael and I attended the Hospitality Included Fest. This group is an event organizer that focuses on the hospitality industry. Basically, they like to throw cool parties for restaurant workers! I love that!

It was hosted in an alley in Milwaukee Junction, behind Oak & Reel (one of my favorite restaurants). Some of Detroit’s top restaurants had a booth set up. All the food and drinks we tried were outstanding… my only complaint is the portions were so big it was hard to try more than one or two restaurants. I would rather have a one or two bite snack and try EVERYTHING.

After we cruised the festival, we stopped at The Kiesling for a drink. This neighborhood bar was built in the late 1800’s as a general store and became a bar in 1913. Cool cocktails, cheap beer and a retro feel complete this classy saloon.

Afterwards, we walked around the Lincoln Street Art Park where some of my favorite murals and graffiti are and I always mange to find a piece of “lost” art. I collect graffiti droppings. Recently Dreamtroit opened… looks like swanky loft living in a slightly sketchy neighborhood. At nearly $1000 a month for a 400 square foot studio apartment I can’t imagine living there… but the vibe certainly was cool. Maybe I’m just old.

Last stop, Woodbridge Pub was hosting a pop-up event and Sunn Anderson was there with his paintings. I’ve seen him working on Belle Isle before and decided for $100 I could support a local artist. He caught my eye because he was giving away his prints on postcards to the kids from the neighborhood. I always fall for a big heart. Turns out he is an art teacher and had a few good stories to tell on top of sharing his work.

Michael and I ended the day with homemade tacos, and I had a Spanish coffee in the yard with Brisket. My favorite kind of Sunday… food, drinks, art and exploring.

Heads up, The Funky Ferndale Art Fair is September 19th thru the 21st, great way to support your local artists. Hot tip… the good art is west of Woodward.

Cheers,
Sharon
