I don’t know about you, but I sure have enjoyed the warm weather these last few weekends. Michael and I celebrated my friend Janis’s birthday with her husband in Columbiaville two weeks ago. We rented two Getaway “cabins” for an overnighter. I’ve mentioned these before… they are basically tiny trailers in a remote campground. The nice part about the trailer is they have everything you need for a night of glamping. I highly recommend a Getaway if you just want to disconnect from life and reconnect with your loved one. Very little distractions there. All you need to bring is food and drink, they even provide firewood and starter for the firepit.

On the drive up we detoured to Bald Mountain for a hike with the dogs before stopping for lunch at the Whitehorse Inn in Metamora. A tired dog is a good dog, and as sweet as Brisket is she can be a real beggar and food thief. Thankfully, the Inn is very dog friendly, even the antique store across the street welcomed our hounds.

After checking into our cabins, we hit the local boat ramp off the Flint River. A few bottles of champagne, chatting with the unique locals and Janis & I busy scoring the techniques of the boat dockers entertained us for the afternoon. I usually just observe and keep my ratings to myself, but Janis liked to yell out her scores. I thought we were going to get chased off, but the boaters seemed to enjoy the heckling. Back at camp we made a fire, the boys played guitar, and Janis and I grilled Surf & Turf Asian style with Udon Noodles. Yummy! A late-night walk around the campsite to star gaze made for an excellent and relaxing evening. We opted for a late check out the next day so we could enjoy some games in the morning, and I made Banana Foster’s French Toast. Easy, affordable Getaway within an hour of Metro Detroit, we all would do it again!

Just this past Sunday, the Pickled Hens gathered and went to the Funky Ferndale Art Fair. This is one of my favorite festivals as most of the art is affordable and created by locals. The art ranges from things like small pop style prints, knitted hats and hand-crafted soaps to large metal sculptures and expensive oil paintings. We started with snacks and drinks at Lynne’s (because the Hens can’t do anything without snacks and drinks), enjoyed her amazing garden and walked into town from there. The fair is on both sides of Woodward on 9 Mile and seems to be getting bigger every year. I hope it doesn’t change too much as it has always been small and quirky. There are food trucks, drink stands, live music, loads of art and great people watching. I even ran into Maddy there and a few regular guests as well.

Speaking of regular guests, I want to thank you, Bruce, for the Perch from your Canadian fishing trip. It was delicious over my Spinach Risotto… ridiculously fresh!

Cheers,
Sharon
