And, another fine but challenging week it has been. Everything has been status quo at the Bistro and on the home front. We saw a huge increase in carry-out business after the Governor suggested to not dine in. Well, we were as busy as “legally allowed” with reservations and, the uptick in to-go got us into “old day’s” sales territory. We’ll take it. Whoever is assigned to the carry-out station has their hands full. It is much harder to coordinate than having a table station. The organization and attention to detail is intense. I am in awe of what the cooks and servers have adapted to over the last months. They are incredible. Sharon and I are very, very thankful to all. And, also, once again we’re grateful for the kind and generous support we receive from you on a daily basis. Many, many thanks.
Sofia and Maddie are fascinated with the squirrels and chipmunks and absolutely love the woods. They come in exhausted from their explorations. I won’t let either of them into the woods after this weekend as the weather will be warm enough for those ever abundant ticks to re-appear. I hate the word hate but I HATE TICKS. They are the most disgusting blood suckers I’ve ever encountered. Both pups are on year round tick repellant medication so it is unlikely that a tick will be able to adhere. But, if they bring one into the house I’m open bait. So, think I’ll cut those odds to near zero by keeping to the straight and narrow concrete path for now. Both Z and Kos are enjoying the spring grass and were “upset” not being able to get out due to the rain. I made sure they got a few extra flakes of hay and some TLC grooming time. The gardens are abounding with spring flowers and it is so great to be able cut a bouquet whenever I want. I’m enjoying daffodils, hyacinths, bleeding hearts and Lenten roses right now. The ferns, chives, thyme, rhubarb and sage are literally bursting out of the ground. I swear they are growing in front of my eyes.
I’ve been an advocate of vegetarian based meals for years. I not only really like a plant based diet but am also concerned by the effect that animals raised for human consumption cause. The environmental impact due to greenhouse gasses, manure waste, water and land usage is extraordinary. It takes 7# of feed to produce a #1 of beef, 3# for pork and 2# for chicken. That is if it is high quality. Using cheap feed requires feeding much more to assure proper nutrition. One way to decrease the footprint caused by livestock is to observe “Meatless Mondays” and to reduce our daily consumption, which, is healthy for us also. A new food “find” is miso broth that is available in the soup isle. Last night’s dinner was a big bowl of steaming miso, brown rice, tofu and scallions. Easy, fast and filling. Really, really good and a fantastic way to make Monday a great way to honor the cause of Earth Day.
