Michael and I are staying in town this Memorial weekend as we had a busy whirlwind trip to Chicago last Sunday. The National Restaurant Association had a show in town, so it was a great excuse to check out what is happening in the restaurant scene in the windy city.

We stayed in the West Loop at The Publishing House B & B. Perfect location to experience Randolf Street known as Restaurant Row in Chicago. Everywhere we went was within walking distance of our accommodations. We loved the “hotel” with only 11 rooms. Every nook was filled with books, paintings, sculptures, live plants and even a piano. The rooms felt private, very clean and the common areas were cozy. The Butler’s Pantry was well stocked with refreshments and the staff was super friendly. The included breakfast was made with love. Highly recommend this unique property on top of a trendy wine bar.

Sunday, we hit the ground running, as I wanted to try as many places as possible in 36 hours. Chicago is a great town for inspiration.

Our list & reviews:

Bocadito’s: Fresh Baja style Mexican cuisine, Tiki tables, Great Drinks and Vibe

Bar Mar: Chef José Andrés (my personal hero chef), Elegant perfectly prepared seafood in sharp surroundings on the river… great patio, pristine service.

Avec: Been around for years, just as good as it’s always been, sharing plates, bartender Pablo had incredible knowledge of their extensive wine list. Uncomfortable seats. A must visit!

Girl & the Goat: Top chef winner Chef Stephanie Izard, bustling crowd, friendly service, great food. Chicago staple!

Elske: hyper local/seasonal with Danish influence. 8 course tasting menu… I was just too full to order, shame as it looked lovely. Food is for the brave. Some unique stuff happening here. Beautiful fireplace patio. Overly “hip” and slightly pretentious. Interesting.

Big Star Taco: cool biker/rocker bartender, whiskey list to die for, great margaritas, ok tacos, the best beans and rice I’ve ever had in a restaurant… they play vinyl and show old movies. Love it.

Kaiser Tiger: beer garden, outdoor bocce & sac toss. Fun! Great place to get out of the rain or sun.

Aba: Mediterranean food, spectacular rooftop patio, great bar, food was a little disappointing. I had high expectations as this is a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, and they are super consistent… but we felt all the food was overcooked. Nice bartender.

Rooh: Upscale Indian, interesting cocktail list, worst dining room set up on two levels, no ambiance… felt discombobulated. Average service. Very tasty food.
Voodoo Donuts: need I say more?

Monteverde: High-end Italian, great appetizers, homemade pastas… REALLY al dente, not cheap, worth it!

I was most inspired by the service in Chicago. Every place the servers were true professionals that clearly understood their menus. Everywhere was busy and had its own vibe, with great decor. I was also reassured we’re doing something right here as I felt like no one place was putting us to shame… especially when I saw droves of line cooks behind the line, 3 hosts at the door, 3 managers on the floor, 4 busboys hanging out and 4-million-dollar furnishings. Waaaay too much $$$$ for our humble little Bistro.

Speaking of the Bistro, it’s usually a quiet holiday weekend so if you haven’t made a reservation and you’re not headed up north… just bop in. We look forward to seeing you!

Cheers,
Sharon
