Mary's Blog and Sharon's chalkboard features  - November 2nd, 2018
And, another fine week it has been! November is upon us in full force. My yard is knee deep in leaves and I dare not start to blow, tarp and move them into the woods yet as there are so many still hanging on to the trees.  The colors have just turned brilliant in the last few days and are intensely red, orange and yellow. Niki and Pico almost always come in with a few leafs attached to their little bodies so I find them throughout the house too.  The horses, Z and Picasso, are borderline OVERLY frisky with the cooler temperatures. We, the riders, really need to sharpen our awareness while on their backs as they’re ready to GO! Once I can wrap my head around Z being so “up” it is really fun to channel the power into an incredible work out for us both. It’s a great time of the year to ride especially with the anticipation of the zero or below mornings on the way which will make it too cold for horses and riders. I pulled the dog and horse heavy blankets out too, getting ready to keep them warm as temperatures fall.

Remember to “fall back” on Sunday, specifically at 2 AM, if you’re up and about. Daylight Savings Time was initially started for energy conservation during WW2 and made “official” in 1973 by President Nixon. 40 % of the world observes it but studies tout the benefits of physical and mental health also. Opponents question the energy savings and note that it disrupts sleep and studies indicate a 10% increase in heart attacks. The “spring forward” is always the 2nd Sunday in March and “fall back” the first Sunday in November, making for a 23 hour day going forward and a 25 hour day turning back.  Wish there was an extra hour every day.

I love the Nature Trails in Kensington and can choose to walk up to 5 miles if I do the “loop” of all three. It is a wide dirt trail with wood bridges and a beautiful little lake. Earlier in the week, with the sun shining, I decided to take a woods trek. It was a very spontaneous decision... something “made me do it.”  Well into the hike I suddenly saw a white animal grazing. I initially thought it was a goat or llama that had escaped from the park farm. As I got closer I realized it was an albino deer, I believe a doe. She allowed me to spend some time with her, fairly close, 4 feet or so away. We had a nice visit and I was reminded of the albino that hung around my house for years just after Tom died. I always felt it was him watching over me. Unfortunately it was killed in a cull…a horrible misjudgment on the shooter’s end.  I “invited” my new friend to come to my woods. Hope she does.
