Welcome to the Bistro!
WOW, what a busy week it has been with family in from Atlanta and St. Pete. My
sister Josephine had a full house with our niece Maddy husband Matt and their
three boys, Thomas home from MSU to join the fun and our sister Marj and her
hubby Mike. Deb, the St. Pete family, stayed with me. They arrived Wednesday
and we gathered at my house for a bite to eat and a visit. I’m not used to having a
5 and 3 year old and 10 month old chilling with the grown-ups. They were so, so
good. Liam, the 5 year old, doesn’t eat much of anything while Pierce, next in line,
eats anything and so does the baby Jack. It was so fun to spend almost 5 days
with everyone. I will say that you have to be young to haul all the “stuff” you need
for 3 youngsters around. Thursday Deb and I headed to Hitsville U.S.A, home to
the Motown Museum a tribute to Motown Records established in 1959 by Berry
Gordy. It is one of Southeast Michigan’s most popular tourist destinations visited
by vacationers from all over the globe who want to stand in Studio A where music
that we all love was recorded. Deb and I were amazed at the history and story of
Hitsville. It’s really amazing and I’d highly recommend a visit. I love the Motown
Vision: “ That all generations will come to know, be inspired by and celebrate the
true Motown Story, Legacy and Sound.” We had fun… Dancing in the Streets,
Being Natural Women, Taking a Midnight Train to Georgia, and pondering Marvin
Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” They were sounds that changed America. This year
marks the 60 th anniversary and a remarkable 180 #1 hits. The Supremes were the
most successful group with 12 billboard No. 1 singles and Michael Jackson the
biggest star. Go…it is well worth the visit!!!
The 19th anniversary of 9-11 is tomorrow and I am reminded about how an act of
terrorism has changed our lives forever. To this day I remember vividly the call
from Tommy that morning, thinking it was to wish his father happy birthday, only
to hear him say “turn on the TV” and subsequently watch the second plane
plough into the South Tower and then successive planes into the Pentagon and a
corn field in Pennsylvania. This tragedy took the largest loss of life since Pearl
Harbor and was the biggest terrorist attack ever. We have moved on, adapted
and I believe we will from COVID also. It’s going to take time but if we look back at
the adaptations that we have made over the last 19 years ago we can do it again.
Be safe: Wear Your Mask, Wash Your Hands, and Social Distance… we all know
Sharon and I have been diligently working on “opening our next restaurant,” a
tent that will be heated and house all of the outside seating that we have now. It
is truly a feat. Lots of work, lots of $$, lots of “figuring it out.” But figure it out we
will. We’re tough cookies…this isn’t going to get us. No way, no how. Stay tuned.
With school starting but not “opening” we’ve decided to offer a family meal
option on our Let Mary and Sharon Cook menu each week. We’d really like your
feedback on what works for you, as parents working remotely and home prepare
meals and anything else that you’d like to pass along to make our food adult and
kid friendly. This week we have a BBQ Rib Kit for 4; Cod Picatta; Shrimp and
Grits; Greek Salad and Tomato Bisque by the Quart. Look for the LM&SC e-mail
later tonight or early tomorrow.
