Yikes, it is cold out there! More like January weather should be. Not that I like taking the pups out in the cold and dark. Or, traipsing through the woods in Kensington because Niki decided to turn left at the end of our lane instead of right, which would have kept us on a road and off the trails. Don’t get me wrong, I love the park, just not when the wind is whipping through the warmest down jacket I own. Like always, we made it home without any undue frostbite, and the pups immediately hit their respective chairs for a two hour nap. Oh, to be able to nap at will. I’m not sure if it is a luxury or skill. I just know I’m not able to “just do it.”

There have been some cool animal sightings in the Brady neighborhood. While driving into work I saw what I thought to be a moose. Honestly, the rack on this animal was so big his head was weighed down. I stopped to watch him and he reciprocated turning to stare at me. What a handsome guy. I’ve never seen such fine antlers. The sun was shining just so and made them seem luminous. They were clean as a whistle and brilliantly shiny. He slowly turned and made his way into the marsh. I left with the warning “take care and watch out!”  Then yesterday Pico was barking so much I had to get up to see what was going on. Usually it means there is some animal outside that has sparked his interest. In this case it was a group of deer, moving through my back woods. And there was the fox that ran within 2 feet of my home office window. It did not look this way or that, but straight ahead, on a mission of some sort. His, or her, feet were mud caked and the fur a gentle red. Before I could get to the door to see which way it was headed it disappeared. This is only the second fox I’ve seen in over 20 years here. There have been a few coyotes too. It is a reminder for me not to let the little ones out alone or off-leash if I’m not with them. They’d be a yummy meal for sure. Actually, I’m amazed that there are so many squirrels around the woods with these predators.

Remember there is a huge Dog Show at the Suburban Show Place in Novi this weekend. There will be over 120 different breeds and lots of opportunities for rescues too.  Speaking of dogs… the pet pantry is in need as we just had a pick-up. Margaret Davies, the brains behind North Oakland Meals on Wheels, is so thankful for OUR efforts.  Remember too that emotionally and physically challenged adults are responsible for re-packaging the large bags of food into smaller zip-locks to aid in the ease of distribution.  So, a food donation helps the pets, their owner’s and the packers. Thanks in advance for your generosity.
