Welcome to the Bistro!
Mary's Blog and Sharon's chalkboard features - December 6, 2019
And, another fine week it has been. The Bistro is decked out for the holidays thanks to my dear sister-in-law Colleen, brother-in-law Charlie, Tammy and her son Conner and daughter Taylor. We are all grateful to have such beautiful and tasteful decorations. Colleen is so talented and artistic... she puts Martha to shame! And, the planter boxes are stunning, as usual. I love the festive atmosphere at the Bistro. And, we’ll run our annual wine-to-go sale now through the end of the year. Buy a case and get ½ off the restaurant price or, by the bottle they are ½ off plus $2. A great way to fill your wine rack. Some exceptions apply. We’re also accepting reservations for larger groups and have some nice dates still available. Bistro Gift Cards ROCK!! Buy from your Server, Over the Phone or At the Bar.
Fun Fact Alert: between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday 189.6 million people shopped, up 14% over last year and spending 16% more. 124 million did their buying in a brick and mortar while 142.2 million did so on websites. The times sure have changed!
I read an interesting article in an industry publication that quoted a Gallup poll ranking 24 business sectors as to popularity with Americans. The restaurant industry, number #1, outperformed the #2, computer industry, by 6% points. The federal government came in last – surprise, surprise. National Restaurant Association research shows that 9 in 10 consumers say they enjoy going to restaurants with most saying that Bistros (!!) are an essential part of their lifestyle. Half of all Americans have worked in the industry at some time of their lives and restaurants are the nation’s second largest private sector employer, employing nearly 10% of the workforce. The computer industry comes in second, grocery third and farming fourth. Pretty impressive numbers. Its official, Americans like restaurants better than gadgets.
Saturday is the 78th anniversary of the attack by the Japanese on the US Naval Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. With no warning 110 minutes of bombs dropped onto the U.S. ships docked and the planes at the airfield killing 2400 service men and wounding 1200 more. Caught totally by surprise the attack brought the United States into WW2 and ultimately the dropping of 2 atomic bombs in Japan in August 1954 bringing to close soon afterwards the bloodiest war of all time. Pray for peace!
