Mary's Blog and Sharon's chalkboard features  - October 11, 2019
And, another fine week it has been.  The weather has been magnificent and lends itself well to outside activities. The horses are very happy to spend hours munching under blue, sunny skies. As an added bonus, flies are dying off and less bothersome. Their winter coats started to fill in a few weeks ago but now, with the warmth, are shedding out. Huge amounts of horse hair are loosened with the curry comb and then brushed out with 2 different brushes, one stiff, and one soft. The end result is a gleaming horse and dust pan full of the hair. They love the attention they get from Courtney but also “self-groom” in the pasture by dropping down and rolling, all four legs in the air, the ground nature’s curry. My little angel, Niki, is 15 years old today. Where does time go?  She is still spry when she wants to be but likes her naps too. I think we’ll take her favorite walk today, the woods trail in Kensington. It may be a little long for an “old” lady but I’m prepared to take breaks and help her along if needed. She is 74 in human years and I guess there aren’t many 74 year olds that can hike over hill and dale for 4 miles either. To figure your dog’s age use this formula: The first year = 15 years, add 9 years to that (24) for the second year and then 5 years for each year. Happy Birthday Niki!!

My “yardscape” is quickly transforming with the change of season. The only blooms left are Hydrangeas. Ferns are browning off in the woods and the grass is strewn with fallen leaves. I thought last week was the final time I’d cut the grass but it will need one more mowing. There are still a few of my little tree frog friends hanging around the windows when the lights are on at night. They’ll hibernate soon. And, I’ve started feeding the birds again to beef them up for winter. The feeders have been empty for the summer and it has taken them a few days to re-discover their “free” meals, which they’ve done with vengeance.

Monday is Columbus Day, the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas on 10-12-1492. An Italian explorer from the Republic of Genoa he was the first European to make the voyage across “the ocean blue.” Franklin Roosevelt declared it a federal holiday in 1937 and it was fixed to the second Monday in October in 1970.  Ironically the day coincides with Canada’s Thanksgiving and the Anniversary of the U.S. Navy on 10-13-1775.  Although it is a very patriotic holiday framed around national loyalty and social progress it is controversial because the settlement of Europeans led to the demise of large portions of native people.  Unlike the banks and post office we’ll be open with arms wide-open to greet you all day!
