May 14, 2021
And, another fine but challenging week it has been.  It must be Spring, because Maddie and Sofia, both 9, are running around like puppies.  They have finally started to listen to my firm “NO” to running after deer. I am trying really hard to keep them out of the woods due to the ever present ticks. Yuck! The plant life is growing in leaps and bounds thanks to the rain.  The peonies are just beginning to bloom and if we have a warm week there will be rhubarb on the menu next weekend.   The bird houses are full; it’s always a pleasure to welcome my feathered friend’s home for the summer.  A Screech owl, named Nebil, adopted us last year around this time. He, or she, disappeared for a stretch but is back now with a “spouse.” A lot of time, even in daylight, I’ll hear the “woo-woo.” Many times, after dark, if I answer back I’m pleasantly surprised to get a response. Nebil is big. I worry about my dogs but after researching I learned that small rodents and finches are their diet. I actually have not seen too many chipmunks, yeah, as they are a menace. Thanks Nebil, but don’t get your sites on my little ones… Frogs, turtles and Sand Cranes abound. Virus doesn’t affect them. TYG.

We, Sharon and I, are waiting with expectation as to when we may open the Bistro to full capacity. And also, the exciting news that the CDC has lifted the mask rule. The state of Michigan has not so we have to abide by the Oakland County Health Department guidelines. We, you, all of us can’t wait. It will be so awesome to see everyone’s smiles once again. I haven’t seen almost any of my team’s full face in over a year. We keep our mask’s on from walking in to walking out.  I am very glad that I decided to keep the Bistro closed for Mother’s day. Everyone’s job has been extremely stressful during all this. We are exhausted at the end of the week. It was important that we got to spend time with our families and not work on, what would surely have been, an insanely busy day. We would have pulled it off, but why? Sales are important because they obviously pay the bills but, more important is the peace and happiness that comes with one’s family.

May is dedicated to 2 worthy health causes – National Stroke Awareness Month and Mediterranean Diet Month. Stroke kills nearly 150, 00 of the 860,000 Americans who die of cardiovascular disease each year – that’s 1 in every 19 deaths from all causes. A stroke triggers brain tissue to die, which leads to brain damage, disability and death. 80% of strokes are preventable by making lifestyle changes to help control cholesterol levels and blood pressure. The symptoms of a stroke can be remembered by the acronym F.A.S.T. F= Face drooping; A= Arm weakness; S= Speech difficulty, slurring of words and T= Time to call 9-1-1 immediately if a person shows any of these signs. Sudden dizziness, blurred vision, severe headache, sudden numbness of the face, arm or leg or confusion or trouble understanding others. Don’t wait to call 9-1-1. Fast treatment can deter serious damage. Eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, be physically active, don’t smoke, limit alcohol and prevent or manage high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and obesity. The Mediterranean Diet can help. It’s a lifestyle that embraces plenty of fruits and vegetables, includes a moderate amount of seafood, legumes, whole grains and olive oil. Red meat and dairy are eaten only occasionally and the avoidance of refined carbs and sugars highly suggested. Protein amounts should cover the least amount of space on your plate with leafy greens and colorful produce the remainder. Season food with fresh herbs versus salt and choose naturally healthy fats like nuts, olive oil and avocado. This isn’t a “diet” but a way of life. Simple changes can lead to a wealth of health benefits such as lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure.
